Two-Way Radio

Two-Way radio based systems have the particular advantage of providing vehicle location data with no monthly fees or data limitations.  RSI can utilize virtually any AVL dedicated (this is very important!) radio network for a real-time AVL system.  Using conventional voice radios RSI can achieve update rates of 4-5 vehicles per second.  RSI’s unparalleled experience implementing AVL systems using two-way radio gives the customer the opportunity to obtain the ultimate system without the ongoing monthly costs.  RSI’s capabilities include using existing radio equipment or implementing a new radio system altogether.

Radio Equipment
RSI can use new or existing radio equipment, depending on what is available or cost effective.  We can sometimes even use “left over” radio equipment that another agency has migrated away from.  A radio-based system will require one dedicated mobile radio for each vehicle as well as a base radio and antenna at a central location.  RSI has extensive experience designing and installing new radio systems from the ground up if needed.  All equipment can simply be conventional voice radio equipment (but dedicated for data).

Frequencies
RSI can use virtually any frequency for AVL including: VHF/UHF, 800/900MHz, 220MHz, etc.  In addition, RSI can assist you in finding and securing a frequency with the FCC for dedicated use.

Radio Frequency Optimization:  RSI SmartSlot™
RSI has pioneered a system for optimizing spectrum usage in radio-based systems.  The system, the most sophisticated of its kind available in the AVL market today, uses dynamic time slots, precise synchronization, and rapid data compression to maximize bandwidth usage on standard voice radio frequencies.  As rapid updates are required during certain operational aspects of the AVL system, the RSI AVL system is readily configured to accept a vast amount of incoming data from fleets of varying sizes. The RSI AVL system is highly scalable to meet your future requirements for increased reporting frequency, increased content traffic, and additional field systems.

Time Synchronization
The Global Positioning System is the most sophisticated time standard in the world, and is accurate to a few nano- (millionths) seconds. RSI leverages GPS’ timing standard to synchronize operations among all mobile units within an AVL fleet.  With an RSI AVL system, “data collisions” and field-to-base transmission conflicts are completely eliminated.

Data Compression
The V-Track™ remote unit uses an embedded 32 Bit Intel processor. This chip is the most powerful microprocessor available in any AVL system on the market today. We harness the extra power of the processor to rapidly integrate external sensor data with GPS locations, and compress the completed message to reduce transmission time. With lowered transmit times, there are considerably less opportunities for errors in a wireless environment. Data integrity in an RSI AVL is second to none.

Dynamic Slot Assignment

To further reduce wireless transmission times while accurately monitoring your vehicles, the RSI Communications Controller works in common with our intelligent field systems to review and update the fleet “polling” sequence once each reporting cycle. For example, only active vehicles will be polled and return information on a regular basis; inactive vehicles within a fleet are represented according to their last-known status and location.
